1. It is estimated that the nose of a bloodhound houses roughly 230 million scent receptors. This is 40 times the amount in the human nose. They also possess a relentless tracking drive and have been known to pursue a scent for over 130 miles, only stopping when it reaches the source of the scent or completely loses the trail.

2. Boxers are capable of holding down jobs that require extensive training. Boxers have been used as wartime couriers, seeing-eye dogs, and police dogs.

3. Dogs resembling Great Danes can be found in Egyptian art dating as far back as 3000 B.C.E.24. The tallest recorded dog on record is a Great Dane named Zeus who is 44 inches from shoulders to ground, putting him at about the size of an average donkey.

4. Near the end of WWII, Germans began hiding their treasures across the borders to preserve them from their imminent defeat; this included not just art and gold, but many of their German Shorthaired Pointers!

5. The greyhound is the fastest breed of domestic dog, with maximum speeds of about 45 miles per hour.

6. Labrador Retrievers were used in their native Newfoundland as working dogs. Fishermen would use Labrador Retrievers to help capture fish from lines and to help pull in nets.

7. A monument to one pit bull hero was erected at Gettysburg. Sallie, a Stafford shire bull terrier, was present at the Battle of Gettysburg, standing guard over wounded Union soldiers.

8. A study by American Temperament Testing Society found the scores regarding the temperament of Stafford shire Bull Terriers and American Pit Bull Terriers, dogs that are commonly called “pit bulls”, were shown to be more stable than the temperament of Golden Retrievers. Statistically, the most aggressive dog breeds tend to be small to medium-sized breeds such as Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, and Jack Russell Terriers.
