1. Feathered trafficking?
Macaws are popular pets, but many
species of macaw are endangered in the wild. This endangered status has led to
laws forbidding wild capture and importation, making illegal trafficking of these
birds on the black market a lucrative business.
2. Here’s a fact to bring to your next Thanksgiving dinner:
Though the ‘gobble gobble’ sound is associated with all turkeys, typically it
is only the male making this sound. Male turkeys perfect their unique ‘gobble’
sounds for turkey mating habits.
3. Contrary to Dracula’s claims, vampire bats DO want to
suck your blood, but are far more likely to feed on cattle and horses than people.
The bite of a vampire bat will not drain its victim of enough blood to cause
harm, but can cause a nasty infection.
4. Cockatiels are monogamous birds that pair off young and
remain loyal to each other throughout the year. Though already paired up, they
still engage in vocalizations and body language of mating rituals when mating
season begins.
5. Domestic cats spend over 50% of their lives asleep, but
some large cats sleep even more than that. Lions and tigers can sleep up to 20
hours a day.
6. Trying to sneak up on a turkey? Good luck! They have
periscopic vision because of the placement of their eyes on the side of their
head. This gives turkeys a 360 degree range of vision.
7. Heroes come in all sizes… and species! Scarlett, a
Brooklyn cat living with her litter in an abandoned building, had to move
quickly when fire threatened the lives of her kittens. The New York Daily News
reported that she fought through the fire and suffered from severe burns, but
Scarlett still managed to carry out each of her five kittens out of the burning
building. She and all but one of her kittens survived due to her quick reaction
and tenacity.
8. Even though they’re native to the Andes Mountains, almost
all chinchillas sold in the United States are direct descendants of the original
eleven that Mathias Chapman, an American mining engineer, brought from South
America in the early 20s.
9. A cow has to pump 400 pints of blood through its udder

10. In just one day, a cow can produce around 60 pounds of manure.

from just one animal!
