30 Animals Facts everyone should know - Part 7

1. Grizzly bear dads have been known to kill cubs, so protective moms find dens that are far away from males. 

2. Ostriches can run faster than horses and male ostriches can roar like lions.

3. In Alaska, whispering in someone’s ear while they are moose hunting can get you jail time!

4. Sharks have more reason to fear us than we do of them. Sharks kill fewer than 10 people per year. Humans kill about 100 million sharks per year.

5. Scientists have named chickens as the closest living relative to a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

6. Barn owls have a lower divorce rate than humans. They are normally monogamous, but about 25 percent of mated pairs split up.

7. A single strand of spider silk is thinner than a human hair, but five times stronger than steel of the same width. A spider silk rope just 2 inches thick could reportedly stop a Boeing 747.

8. Like the White Walkers in Game of Thrones, Reindeer eyeballs turn blue in winter to help them see at lower light levels. Enhanced night vision activates and a layer of tissue behind the retina makes them look blue. During the summer, their eyes reflect most of the light through the retina resulting in a golden appearance.

9. The Pacific Giant octopus has three hearts to accompany their eight tentacles! Two pump blood to the gills, while the third circulates blood to the rest of the body.

10. A blue whale’s tongue is massive and can weigh as much as 8,000 pounds. That’s as much as an elephant!

11. Diamonds aren’t EVERY girl’s best friend… Male penguins propose to females by giving them a pebble. Gentoo Penguins look for the smoothest, shiniest pebble to present to the female he chooses. If she accepts his proposal, she will place the pebble in her nest as a symbol of accepting him as her mate.

12. It’s electric! The electric eel can deliver 600 volts of current. That’s enough electricity to knock down a fully-grown horse!

13. Bad news for city dwellers: A cockroach can survive decapitation, but will die after a week out of hunger or thirst.

14. No dog left behind! African wild dogs are known for caring for the young, old and injured in their pack. They care for wounds by licking them and bring back food for the old and injured.

15. Rats are ticklish too! When tickled along their nape area, they emit ultrasonic sounds that can only heard by humans using special sound equipment.

16. Leeches have been used in medicine for over 2,500 years. They have three separate jaws, each with 100 tiny teeth to bite through skin and suck blood. Widely used in the 19th century, they are still utilized in parts of the world to heal wounds and restore circulation.

17. A starfish has five eyes. That’s one for each leg. However, they can only detect light and darkness.

18. The fingerprints of a koala are so indistinguishable from humans that they have on occasion been confused at a crime scene.

19. Hippos secrete a reddish, oily fluid called “pink sweat” that contains a water-repellent, moisturizing sunblock that can also be utilized as an antibiotic!

20. Humans aren’t the only ones known to fight over land. A super colony of invasive Argentine ants, known as the "California large", covers 560 miles of the U.S. West Coast. It's currently engaged in a turf war with a nearby super colony in Mexico.

21. Pandas can’t get enough bamboo! It takes 28 pounds of bamboo to satisfy a giant panda’s dietary needs.

22. The largest bald eagle nest on record was 20 feet high and weighed two tons.

23. It is unwise to pick a fight with a grizzly bear. Their bite is strong enough to crush a bowling ball!

24. The now extinct colossus penguin stood as tall as LeBron James!

25. Kangaroos use their tails for balance, so if you lift a kangaroo’s tail off the ground, it can’t hop.

26. Everyone needs a “bestie”. Even cows have best friends!

27. A snail can sleep for three years.

28. Cats and horses are highly susceptible to black widow venom, but dogs are relatively resistant. Sheep and rabbits are apparently immune.

29. Elephants show tremendous empathy, even to other species. They mourn their dead and will put themselves in harm’s way to help another animal.

30. In 1924, A Labrador Retriever was sentenced to life without parole at Eastern State Penitentiary for killing the Governor’s cat.
