2. Ray Caldwell pitched a complete game after being struck by lightning. He was struck in the middle of the ninth inning and “shook it off”.

4. In 1975, Junko Tabei from Japan became the first woman to reach the top of Everest.

5. The average golf ball has 336 dimples, although they can range between 300 to 500.

16. Princess Ann, the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, did not have to undergo gender verification at the 1976 Olympics due to “Royal Courtesy”. She rode the Queen’s horse, Goodwill.

17. NFL referees receive Super Bowl rings.

18. John Isner and Nicholas Mahut played 183 games over 3 days at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, which beats the previous record of 112 games.

19. When William G. Morgan came up with Volleyball in 1895, he tried to use a basketball, but found it too heavy. He pulled out the basketball’s inflatable rubber inside and played with that until a custom ball was created by A.G. Spalding.

20. The Cubs didn't play any night games at home prior to 1988, when lights were installed at the field.

21. Olympic gold awards are really made generally of silver. The 1912 Olympic Games were the last to include medals made of solid gold.

31. On MLB’s Opening Day in 1907, the New York Giants hosted the Philadelphia Phillies. New York was hit with a snowstorm that left the stadium filled with snow. When the Giants fell behind by the sixth inning, Giants fans were so unhappy that they started throwing snowballs at the field. The umpires swiftly called the game and a forfeit was called in the Phillies’ favor.

32. In order to take allow pitchers to get a better grip, Major League Baseball wipes down each baseball with mud. They have been doing as such for more than 75 years.

33. The New England Patriots are the only franchise to have scored three touchdowns in less than one minute.

34. Tony Cloninger, a pitcher playing for the Braves in 1966, became the first play in National League history to hit two grand slams in one game.

35. China did not win an Olympic medal until 1984. At the 2008 Beijing games, the Chinese won 100 awards. Apparently, they finally got the hang of it.

53. Because they both lost so many players to WWII military service, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles combined to become the “Steagles” during the 1943 season.
